Praise be to Allaah.

According to the opinions of most Islamic scholars, it is better to do Sujood (prostrate) when reciting or listening to any ayah of prostration without delaying. It is an emphatic Sunnah of Allaah's Messenger (ï·º).

When prostrating, saying Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar) is prescribed because our beloved prophet (ï·º) used to do so which is mentioned in the following Hadeeth:

The Messenger of Allah (ï·º) used to recite Qur’an to us, and if he reached an ayah where a sajdah (prostration) was prescribed, he would say takbeer and prostrate and we would do likewise.

(Reported by Ahmad, 2/17; al-Bukhaari, 2/33,34; Muslim, 1/405, no. 575).

But you should not say any Takbeer or performing Salaam when coming up from it which is prescribed by the most Islamic scholars.

On the other hand, if you recite an Ayah (verse) of prostration during prayer and perform prostration, it is prescribed to say Takbeer when going down to prostration and coming up from it because the prophet (ï·º) used to say Takbeer in every movement of prayer and he said:

Pray as you have seen me praying.

Sahih al-Bukhari 631

During prayer, when an Ayah of sajdah is recited, one should go to prostration directly without bowing between and stand up after prostration. But if one is praying behind an Imaam (leader), one can only go to prostration if Imaam does so.

In the sujood al-tilaawah, it is obligatory to say Subhana Rabbiy al-A’laa (glory be to my Lord, the most high) as it is obligatory in the prayer. You can also say anything (Du'aa' or Dhikr) more, that are Mustahabb.

Some of us don't like it to prostrate after listening or reciting a verse of Sajdah because they are not in the state of Wudoo' or some do Wudoo' to prostrate. It is not necessary. According to the most correct opinion, being in the state of Wudoo' to perform Sujood al-Tilaawah is not obligatory. So one should prostrate to Allaah when listening to any verse of prostration, either in the state of Wudoo' or not.

Not prostrating after reciting or listening to any verse of prostration is not a sin as it is stated in the following Hadeeth:

Narrated Rabi`a:
`Umar bin Al-Khattab recited Surat-an-Nahl on a Friday on the pulpit and when he reached the verse of Sajda he got down from the pulpit and prostrated and the people also prostrated. The next Friday `Umar bin Al-Khattab recited the same Sura and when he reached the verse of Sajda he said, "O people! When we recite the verses of Sajda (during the sermon) whoever prostrates does the right thing, yet it is no sin for the one who does not prostrate." And `Umar did not prostrate (that day). Added Ibn `Umar "Allah has not made the prostration of recitation compulsory but if we wish we can do it."

Sahih al-Bukhari 1077

So, omitting Sujood al-Tilaawah is not a sin.

But Allaah loves and praise them who prostate to Him. We all should practice this emphatic Sunnah.

And Allaah knows the best.
